In that time, it\u2019s emerged that the San Francisco lender\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184857-www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wells-fargo-uncovers-1-4-million-additional-fake-accounts\/?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened millions of fake accounts<\/a>, often in customers names and always without said customers\u2019 permission;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184861-www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wells-fargo-car-insurance-wrongly-charged-customers\/?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged hundreds of thousands of customers for auto insurance they didn\u2019t want or need<\/a>, leading to people having their cars repossessed;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184865-www.wsj.com\/articles\/wells-fargo-bankers-chasing-bonuses-overcharged-hundreds-of-clients-1511830230?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overcharged clients in its foreign-exchange business<\/a>; paid $50 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184869-www.reuters.com\/article\/us-wellsfargo-settlement-iduskbn12v27f?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overcharging hundreds of thousands of homeowners for unnecessary appraisals<\/a>; paid $108 million to settle claims that it\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184873-www.reuters.com\/article\/us-wellsfargo-settlement\/wells-fargo-to-pay-u-s-108-million-over-veterans-loans-iduskbn1ak1u1?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged military vets hidden fees to refinance their mortgages<\/a>; and literally\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184877-www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2018\/11\/democrats-demand-info-on-acting-attorney-general-matthew-whitaker-masculine-toilet-scam?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0shareholders they can\u2019t sue over misleading statements by management like\u00a0<em>we\u2019re changing ours ways<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>we want to regain your trust,\u00a0<\/em>because said management is full of s&#8211;t (or, as it\u2019s known among corporate lawyers,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184881-www.latimes.com\/business\/hiltzik\/la-fi-hiltzik-wells-puffery-20181109-story.html?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cpuffery\u201d defense<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">All of that, obviously, has played a major role in catapulting Wells Fargo to the No. 1 search result when one searches for things like\u00a0<em>worst bank ever<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>I want to be abused by a registered broker-dealer.<\/em>\u00a0But apparently, all this time, Wells was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184885-www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wells-fargo-loan-modification-error-homeowners-who-went-into-foreclosure-seek-answers\/?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cooking up something<\/a>\u00a0that would make all its past \u201cmissteps\u201d look like child\u2019s play:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Wells Fargo says a computer glitch is partly to blame for an error affecting an estimated 545 customers who lost their homes. The giant bank filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission last month, revealing it incorrectly denied 870 loan-modification requests. About 60 percent of those homeowners went into foreclosure.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">In an interview,\u00a0Jose Aguilar,\u00a0one of the affected homeowners,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184885-www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wells-fargo-loan-modification-error-homeowners-who-went-into-foreclosure-seek-answers\/?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0CBS News that after falling a few months behind on mortgage payments while trying to fix a mold problem in his family\u2019s home, he asked Wells Fargo to modify their loan to lower their monthly payments. After being told he might qualify for a modification, Aguilar heard nothing for months and then was forced to start the process over again. Ultimately, it took the lender a year to get back to him, at which point he was turned down and his house went into foreclosure. With his credit destroyed, no one would rent to Aguilar, and he and his son had to move into the basement of a friend\u2019s house. (Aguilar and his wife split up after they lost their home.) Speaking to ABC News, Aguilar\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mail01.tinyletterapp.com\/besslevin\/levin-report-nation-s-worst-bank-finds-creative-new-way-to-destroy-people-s-lives\/13184889-abcnews.go.com\/business\/wells-fargo-customer-explains-computer-glitch-cost-home\/story?c=18c43cae-b515-4696-96fc-936dab8489e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that he \u201cthought about suicide many times.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s been very hard for me. It\u2019s something I wouldn\u2019t wish upon anybody,\u201d he told CBS reporter\u00a0Anna Werner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;\">Then, last September\u2014three years after Wells Fargo basically ruined his life\u2014Aguilar received a letter from the bank that read: \u201cDear Jose Aguilar. We made a mistake . . . we\u2019re sorry.\u201d It wrote that the decision to deny his loan modification was based \u201con a faulty calculation,\u201d and acknowledged that it should have been approved.
