A New Year’s Suggestion for Better Health!

Friday, January 1st, 2016

We would like to start the New Year by wishing you the happiest and healthiest of days which will extend to the entire year.

We also wish you a year of the kind of work and play that will keep you healthy and will also help change the world.  Take care  of and empathize with those with whom you share this earth – not just humans, but animals and all the other creatures.  Too often we think only humans matter and we generally can also eliminate some of them from our care and concern.

An example of what one man did with a small part of his life during a very difficult time in the United States:  “Dr. Paul Bragg opened in NYC, Macfadden’s 7 famous “Penny Restaurants” during big Depression Era. They fed millions of hungry people with healthy vegetarian meals for only a penny! Inspirational music and literature was given out to inspire and guide them.”

To pass along to you something else from the Bragg family – their motto – ” “You are what you Eat, Drink, Breathe, Think, Say, & Do!”

Sometimes, or should we say most times, we act as though what we Eat, Drink, Breathe, Think, Say and Do has no affect on us whatsoever when in reality that is the sum total of who we are.

Finally, we recommend that you subscribe to the Bragg family newsletter.  It is free and always full of sage advice.   To subscribe you will find a box on the first page of their web site, which can be found by clicking on this link – www.bragg.com – fill in your email address and you are set to receive their monthly newsletters.

Excerpts from their JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016 newsletter follows:

T. Colin Campbell launched a revolution when he published his breakthrough book, THE CHINA STUDY. Dr. Campbell spent 40 years researching nutrition around the world. What he found consistently and repeatedly is that too much animal protein in the diet – anything that comes from an animal like beef, chicken, fish, dairy, eggs – causes not only cancer, but heart disease, and a long list of other diseases. Doctors and Scientists everywhere are corroborating his findings. Legions of medical and lifestyle experts are joining the chorus: the Epidemic of Disease that is currently plaguing the United States is in large part due to the American Diet. We’ve been brainwashed by advertising, and tempted by low-cost, government subsidized industries to eat too much meat and dairy. Not only that, much of the commercial food in our country is now tainted with pesticides, GMOs, growth hormones, and other cancer-causing toxins! Want to stay healthy? Eat more fresh, organic fruits & vegetables, and Dr. Campbell recommends eliminating animal protein or cutting back to 5%. Your body will love being healthy and the planet needs you too!

January — New Year Resolutions for a Healthy New 2016

Don’t be part of World’s Health Crisis, be part of the Solution! 2016 is the perfect time to begin your new lifestyle: switch to a plant-based diet for you and your family; create a workout schedule and stick with it; learn yoga, meditation, or just plain deep breathing to help eliminate stress. What we eat today is walking and talking tomorrow. Exercise enhances circulation which is critical for elimination, and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your cells. Stress is negative energy that can build up in your system and ultimately cause your immune system to collapse. Most people can stay healthy by making these simple, lifestyle improvements. Here’s to healthy 2016!

February is “American Heart Month”

Heart Disease is STILL the Leading Cause of Death of Men and Women in America. But did you know that heart disease is not only preventable, but reversible? And in many cases without surgery? Our country has a handful of brave, pioneer medical doctors like Dr. Dean Ornish, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, who are standing up against the “system,” and curing heart disease by putting their patients on plant-based diets! And, as mentioned above, exercise and stress management is also important as well as abstinence from tobacco and alcohol! Learn more from the Bragg “Healthy Heart” book and other publications on www.Bragg.com.

ENJOY BRISK WALKS DAILY & HEALTHY Stationary Jogging

Do while watching TV, talking on phone, or at work breaks. It gives your 70 trillion cells a great massage that promotes healthy circulation! TRY IT! You can truly walk your worries away!

Dr. Patricia Pays Tribute to her dear friend, publishing guru, Dan Poynter

Many years ago, Dan Poynter was an avid hang glider. Wanting to learn more about the sport, but discovering there were no books on the subject, he decided to write his own. The book became an instant Best Seller in the self-publishing world. Since then, Dan wrote over 130 books, became the go-to authority on self-publishing, and lectured around the world. He was Patricia’s friend and consultant for over 40 years! Dan passed away recently, an accident took his life. He will be fondly remembered in a Memorial Service at the Bragg Organic Farm in Santa Barabara, California.

Dr. Patricia Recognized on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars!

Celebrities, V.I.P.‘s, and throngs of Bragg Followers flocked to Palm Springs recently to honor Dr. Patricia for her life as a Health Crusader. A “Star” engraved with Paul and Patricia Bragg’s names was instated for all perpetuity. Patricia also gave health lectures at several Palm Springs venues, including the Palm Springs Health and Fitness Expo where she spoke to standing-room-only crowds!

Christmas – A Joyous Occasion?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2015

copyright Bettina Network, inc. 2015

We are so accustomed to celebrating holidays with a certain emotion which seems intrinsic to that holiday that we generally don’t think about why or if that emotion is appropriate to the holiday.

Good Friday is clearly a somber occasion and our emotions are quite turned down on that day.  The Churches drape themselves in black and people come to Church to mourn.

Christmas, however, is joyous.  Much gift giving and party attending and celebration.  But is that the appropriate emotion for the ‘celebration’ of the birth of Jesus?

The bible clearly talks about and acknowledges Jesus as God.  Although maybe not God again until the resurrection – because before that Jesus is human and experiencing all of the good and bad of life in human form.

Why did God have to come to earth to subject God’s self to our infirmities, sadnesses, pain, sin and more?  To save us from our sins – so says the bible.  Once the virgin birth happens we celebrate the arrival of God on earth because our sins are forgiven – penance has been paid once and for all times with the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus.

What a horrible thought and what an awful commentary on all of us.  We celebrate that God has had to take human form because we would not stop sinning.  Jesus the Christ brought forgiveness of all of our sins.  We seem to have brought jealousy, anger, resentment, and much more as we go downhill with the ugly side of human nature.

To me, it seems we should sit with  sack cloth in ashes beating our breasts because we brought God down to such a low level.  To celebrate the necessity of such an act and gift because we could or would not act solely out of our better nature is but a small part of Christmas.  The larger part is the tearing apart of our garments because of what we caused the God we supposedly worship to experience.  Caring plus Empathy equals Love, some say.  We care about God, but we have no empathy so how do we get from Caring about God to Loving God?  The way we celebrate Christmas shows our complete lack of empathy.  The way we live shows how strongly we care about what God can give us, which is where we calculate God’s worth.  Which is why we pray.  And, if God doesn’t answer our prayers we question God’s existence.

Our self-absorption and self-centeredness overwhelms every other emotion.  We act as though we are God and God is really our concierge.  Suggest prayer is about something other than the adult version of a child’s prayer for a bicycle will bring down the wrath of the world on your head and not just the Christian world.

We act out the necessity of such a sacrifice, the birth of Jesus,  everyday many times a day, even some two thousand plus years after that original sacrifice.  Parenting gives one a little look into the love God had to have for us to do such a thing.  Sacrifice your adult life to raise your children and give them what they need to get through life to its end and what do you receive in return?  From what we have seen – mostly entitlement from your children.  The moments of genuine love and giving are few and far between.  Sounds like a re-enactment of why God felt it necessary to become human for our sake.  God gave us Jesus and we responded by replacing Jesus with Santa Claus.

Buying all kind of presents from retail shops; getting together with friends and too much alcohol; dreading Christmas dinner with the family because it will end in horribleness; and I could go on and on.  We are doing all of this while there are so many people in pain; at the end of their lives and alone not able to pass along their immortality, which to most of us is our life story.  Why can’t we pass along our life story?  Because no one is listening.  Only celebrities and the rich and famous get to do that.

And it does seem to be getting worse, this ‘celebration’ of Christmas.  It starts right after Halloween and continues through January.  Some of us ease our consciences by making an effort to give a small part of our ‘celebration’ to those in need – and generally that is a very small part, usually limited to this one time Christmas gift giving.

We turn our Churches into concert halls for the holiday and pat ourselves on the back as to how wonderful we are because of it.  We don’t do that by bringing those in need, to whom we dedicate those concerts, into the Church/Concert Hall for an evening joining with others to meet and greet and celebrate and form longer lasting relationships, but by using that Concert Hall atmosphere to indulge our need to lift ourselves above the pact with the nobless oblige feelings that creates in us.

The holiday in Christianity to celebrate would be Easter.  However, Easter passes with barely a note, a present, a celebration. Not many family dinners because we go off to warmer climes or to celebrate other than at home and the less fortunate we give a small bit of our resources to over Christmas does not repeat over Easter.

We don’t stop to think of what a sacrifice it was for God to take on human form and all of the pains and vicissitudes of being human.  If we let those thoughts into our consciousnesses for even a moment our lives would change.  We give lip service to that and move on with our celebration.

Having given us 30 plus years – the way we count time – it was enough.  We rewarded Jesus the Christ, for this gift we celebrate at Christmas of God becoming equal to us all for our sake, with a crucifixion.

One interpretation of the resurrection after the crucifixion is that it could be that God was disgusted with the scene he was a part of and after the horrible experience of the crucifixion, took back this gift of equality and of giving an example to all of humanity of how life could be lived with a different set of values, a different character, a different morality and so got out of here to a better place, leaving us with the mess, corruption, ugliness that we created and continue to wallow in because that seems far better to us than to clean ourselves up and act in a way that would not need such a sacrifice from God.

Not the least of our sins is the one which led us to using the story of Jesus on this earth as a way to strengthen sexism – by declaring Jesus’ birth as a male child the justification for the extreme Paternalism and Male Superiority which pervades our Churches.

Next to that is the fact that we took Jesus’ birth and life as a reason to reinforce racism by portraying  ‘him’ with White skin and softly flowing blondish-brown hair.  Would that be shoring up the racism we practice?

This is all such a pattern of how we live.  Didn’t we take God-given food grown with sunlight, air, rain and turned it into something horrible with the introduction of chemicals, machinery to change its texture, color and nutritional value because man could make more money when its sold – bought cheap from the farmer, ‘ processed’ and sold for a fortune to everyone else?

Don’t we continually destroy the beautiful universe around us?  It is so beautiful to look up at the sky; to see the flowers; to enjoy the life giving oxygen of the trees – until we cut them up, cut them down to make money?  And guns? and so many artificial things we don’t need, but work ourselves to death to obtain, neglecting that which is real and of God?

How long, O God, must we suffer the pangs and vicissitudes of our humanity.  It doesn’t look at all changed over these two thousand plus years.  We are still a sinful humanity.  What did your birth change – really?

A Response to “Dogs = Emotional Slavery”

Sunday, November 8th, 2015

Thank you for your blog on dogs.  I didn’t think anyone would have the guts to say what many of us are thinking and afraid to say because all around us are people who are so totally into their dogs it is pathetic, while the rest of the world just shakes its head in disbelief.

My pet peeve is the filth that dogs bring.  We are afraid of rats and talk about the diseases they bring.  It takes over 500 rats to make the kind of ‘shit’ that dogs make with one bowel movement and the smell is awful.  Does the real difference in the way we think about these mammals comes from the fact that we control dogs, but can’t control rats?  It is clearly not cleanliness or the spread of disease.  Dogs are, hands down, able to spread disease much faster and more lethally than can rats.

I’ve also noticed how dogs walk all over the place and when they get home they walk into the house bringing whatever is on their feet and the first thing they do is to shake themselves to get rid of all the ‘stuff’ their hair has collected during their walk.  Dogs themselves aren’t so filthy, they know what to do to keep themselves clean, it is their interaction with owners who either don’t know or don’t care about the negative reaction of their dogs with the rest of society.  What comes off when they shake is amazing.  Check it out and see if some of your diseases haven’t come from your home collecting all of this stuff.

I am so tired to taking other people’s dog shit out of my garden that I would like to outlaw dogs in my neighborhood.

What is most amazing to me is the fact that dog owners take their dogs for a ‘walk’ twice a day – at least.  Actually, they are taking their dogs to the bathroom to pee and shit in another area – at least several blocks away from their own homes and gardens because they don’t want that mess, germs, bacteria and smell close to them.

I’ve seen dog owners take their dogs to other peoples gardens and hold the dogs to pee on the flowers and recent plantings that others have paid for and are taking care of to beautify their homes and neighborhoods. Why do the dog owners do this?  So they don’t have to pick up the filthy shit.  I’ve seen people walking their dogs with bags in their hands to pick up the dog excrement.  Do they use the bags?  Many don’t.  It is mostly for show.  If the dogs have a bowel movement in your garden, the owners can walk away from it and leave it there.  The same thing with the small garden areas around trees, especially if there are plantings around the trees which cover the dogs shit so it isn’t found until they have moved away from what they have turned from a lovely garden into a dog toilet which does not flush.

It is time for this to stop.

I love dogs – but the dog owners are making life impossible.  I read your blog when I had just come in from picking up dog shit off my lawn.

How do we get this to stop?  It is time to stop romanticizing dogs and look at the reality of their lives amongst us.  Particularly,  their owners need to be trained and to understand this is not playtime or snuggle time, but reality time.  The reality here is its not the dogs who are the problem, but their owners.

Sexism 101 – Father Figure Problems

Monday, September 28th, 2015

copyright 2015 Bettina Network, inc.

One guest brought a problem to the breakfast table.

She was late arriving and most people were ready to leave.

Her agitated state made all of us stay and the resulting conversation, we felt, belonged on your blog.

We deal with sexism in all ways and places.  Mostly, we talk and write about it in the workplace because that is where your income and vocation come into play.  This breakfast table talk was about sexism in the family.  Particularly with daughters who have father issues they don’t think about, recognize, work on or see as anything having to do with them.

Many women – especially those above 30 – have father figure issues and work them out in their lives.  Most particularly in their romantic lives and in relationship to their mothers.  Have a problematic relationship with your father and your mother gets trashed.

Sexual abuse has come into play now more than ever.  In those above 30 it was not the issue it has become today.  Men with ego problems work out their issues by using women, usually their wives and their daughters are the ones who suffer.

This woman was trying to talk with her daughters about their choice of male companion – husband, boy friend, fiancé, etc.  She noticed that the male companion they chose was always one who was sexually abusive – and – we were not talking about beating or being physically abusive.  We were talking about the male who pursued them being their teacher, boss, someone who was over them in a father-like position.  The young women were protesting to their mother that she was being “hyper” and didn’t understand, paranoid with a chip on her shoulder, etc..  We thought she understood only too well because her own history reflected the same abuse, only at a time when to marry a male above you was looked upon as your having made quite a “catch”.  The woman making that “catch” was looked up to, but in real time, on a day-to-day basis paid a heavy price in her personal life. As she talked we realized she basically hid this side of her life from everyone and presented a great looking marriage to the world.  She couldn’t hide it from her children, but they saw her life through a child’s eyes and interpreted it through their own veils – through which she didn’t come out very well.

A woman in that position, so the table conversation went, would probably be very angry most or all of her married life.  Basically, because she would not have recognized the sexual abuse she experienced during the courtship process, the marriage and the rearing of family.

Such a spouse needed the ego boost of having made a ‘conquest’ and would expect that ‘conquest’ to be in an inferior place to him.  When that didn’t line up with the reality of the relationship, the woman suffered as the man tried constantly to pull the rug out from under anything she did to fulfill her life.  She thought he did that even if the cost was to him, her, the marriage and the children.  The things she did and contributions she made, if they were not according to her ‘stereotype’ he did not want them to succeed and did what he could to kill all of her initiatives and hard work.

He was her fulfillment and that is what she was limited to.  He was her fulfillment according to his judgment and expectations.  Whenever she tried to live her life on her own path she would find herself mired in mess.  If she hadn’t dealt with what was happening and could or would not look at the reality of her life with this spouse then anger, frustration, explosions would follow.  The children, witnessing this anger and those explosions put the blame exactly where it did not belong – on their mother, who then shouldered the negativity of her children and the abuse of her spouse.  The abuse was never – in the family being discussed – physical, it was always on a very different, totally accepted level.

With her children now grown and having walked away from her to their father, what does she do!

Her agitation and unhappiness at breakfast, we thought, was coming from the fact that she either hadn’t seen her life as it was and how she had lived it during this marriage or the truth of that marriage was trying to come out and she wasn’t ready to deal with it.  She was concentrating on her children and the pain of their rejection.

I reflected on how many older women with children I knew, whose children were now alienated from their mother and all in the bosom of their father.  Most of the fathers I knew were divorced and in ‘new’ marriages where their ‘new’ wives were mightily puffing up that male ego.

We did a lot of talking, but didn’t know where to go with this or how to help.  We skipped our morning appointments because this topic drew all of us – wonder why it had such a strong draw.  I suspect it is something we all have inside and have not allowed to come out because it is not such an accepted, commonly discussed topic.  I don’t even know how to write about it for this blog, but feel it is important enough to at least make the attempt.

Bettina’s Fried Chicken – the Ultimate Recipe

Friday, August 28th, 2015

copyright Bettina Network, inc. 2015

This is fried chicken the way Grandmother made it.  And remember – taste happened in Grandmother’s recipes.  Todays’ processed food and processed food recipes have to use lots of salt and sugar to make their food taste.  Grandmother used very little sugar in anything and even less salt and the sugar she used was not the over-processed, over-refined sugar which delivers nothing but a sweet taste that gets old and ugly when you begin to wake up your taste buds with real food.

  1. Pour enough organic milk in a bowl to cover the chicken you are going to fry.
  2. Add organic apple cider vinegar.  Use your judgment for how much – you really do have taste and really do need to stop slavishly following recipes without using your judgment on the ingredients, etc.  Each recipe you use should become your own.
  3. Let the milk and vinegar sit for several minutes while it bubbles and becomes like buttermilk.
  4. Instead of the organic apple cider vinegar – or if you want a change, squeeze a couple lemons into the milk and let sit until you get buttermilk.
  5. Put organic chicken pieces into the milk and let sit for a couple hours or preferably overnight.
  6. When you are ready to fry the chicken – the oil you use is crucial because it adds to the taste and health benefits of this dish. We use a couple.  Half organic butter and half organic coconut oil in a skillet to about 1/3 the way to the top of the skillet.  Or, if you want a change and a very different taste try organic peanut oil.
  7. NO! Don’t use olive oil.  That is used beautifully in a salad or some other dish which you do not cook.  You don’t want rancid oil as the basic taste of what you are cooking.  It becomes a taste you recognize and like if you use if often, but it is not a good one.
  8. After heating the oil, rinse the milk mixture off the chicken under cool running water
  9. Put the chicken in organic flour and coat the chicken.  Let sit a few minutes for the flour to sort of harden before putting chicken in the skillet.
  10. Sprinkle himalayan salt, cayenne pepper, thyme over the chicken before putting the chicken in the skillet.  And of course, those are all organically grown spices.  If you are Italian or have those taste buds, you can add organic oregano to the spices you use on this chicken.  We think the combination of these four spices gives the ultimate taste, but it is your judgment call.
  11. Cook, turning when the skin turns the color brown you best like in chicken.
  12. There are two ways to finish this chicken.  You can continue frying the chicken in the iron skillet until it is done or when the chicken has browned you can put it on a baking pan in the oven at 350 degrees and bake until done.
  13. Enjoy a powerfully great fried chicken.

Sandra Bland – Strange Fruit

Friday, July 24th, 2015

imagesOnce upon a time, the “Strange Fruit, hanging from the trees” used to be from trees with green leaves, a trunk and branches growing up from the ground splattered with red.

Today, the “Strange Fruit, hanging from the trees” is hanging from man-made trees with blue reflected all around.

But look!  Isn’t that the old white cloth under the blue?

And aren’t those tall pointy white hats pushing out from under the official issued uniform?

Really strange and awful fruit, rapidly spreading the disease of racism all across the country.

Being covered up by fear – that fear keeping those who could act from doing so.

Why!  Oh God, Why!

This strange fruit is is Black and female –

the fear is that riots will invade those lovely, green, middle-class communities.

Rather let the strange fruit multiply and just hang there in silence.  Much better than to act.  The sacrifice of the few for the many.

But doesn’t that spread?  isn’t it happening more rapidly?

Terrorism?

Not from the Middle East!

White – Male – Conservative – with strings into the groups of old

The Klan, the Citizens Council, the neoNazi …………………….why bother with a list, you know the names

This isn’t simply racism – this is Racism and Sexism.

Life is becoming ever more strange and silent.

The silent majority is back and in control!

Let the media slip in little bits and pieces to make it sound less awful; less threatening; let us not place blame where it belongs, but obfuscate.

Won’t that protect those of us who count?

Homicide, murder, reduced to a paid vacation, sometimes called Administrative leave – which happens before exoneration.

Donald Trump? How to ruin a great breakfast!

Thursday, July 9th, 2015

A brief breakfast conversation, which most of us killed almost immediately, but not before several points were made:

1) While his first wife was working hard to help develop the Trump empire, the man was womanizing!  And who knows what kind of sexual activity happened after and through the rest of his life and marriages, especially given that history, which could not be denied!  Is it true that questionable sexual ethics go hand and glove with questionable life and business ethics?

2) His wife divorced him and in the process, he filed bankruptcy – isn’t that normally done to negatively affect a divorce settlement? Is he ethically challenged?

3) What does that add up to? – adultery? sexual abuse? questionable business strategies? etc.

And he is dumping on Mexicans – and whoever else he thinks will help his presidential aspirations!

He doesn’t have to do that, the media/press has been roped into being an excellent campaign committee to promote his presidential aspirations.  If the press didn’t idolize him, his presidential bid would be in the dumpster. – actually, at breakfast, it was said ….”in the toilet”.

With all his comments and public/press appearances – consider the source.

We nominate Donald Trump, his presidential aspirations and the media who lionize him to Bettina Networks Box of Shame and Bettina Networks’ Hall of Shame.  One category does not suffice.

Transforming Africa! A Poem by Esi Elliot

Tuesday, July 7th, 2015
Copyright by Bettina Network, inc. for Esi Elliot

Africa, once again is transforming into a king

Linking,

Bridging and reaching to unite as one motherland!

Embracing and lacing through cleave of nations,

Moving from collision to coalition.

Golden chains of economic cooperation that adorn the neck –

Thinking –

A crown of dazzling precious stones

Adorn the head and stirs the blood in the brain.

Creative thoughts are ablaze like crackling fireworks,

Shooting upwards with strategic zest and zeal

Signaling kingly feats.

Drinking,

Gulping down sweet wines of knowledge and education

Refreshing liquids of intellectual realization

Greatly priced and intricately styled

Prints of human capital

Rich gold bouquets of culture and empowerment

Quilts of liberalization and freedom

Milking

The belly of resources split open

To spill out the innates of prosperity

Gold, silver, diamonds, wood, ivory and precious stones

Carved intricately into vanity cases full of perks that surround the cities

Blinking

Away the tear drops that blind the vision

Eagle eyesights watchful over courts and parliaments

Eyes like colored glass-beads feast on order

A resplendent image of a million twinkling stars

Organized, prioritized, synchronized

Sinking

Dredging the stinking oasis of corrupt practices and wrong values

Siphoning the huge infected cloistered water bodies

Destroying the sandbars of barren deserts of extortions

Creating a timeless and enduring allure of a welcoming land

Winking

We did it!  Great dynasty of lucrative offers, studied elegance, colorful mosaic

Of festivals, fairs and feasts

Joyous pageantry of celebration, exuberance and fanfare

King again, oh Africa!

King again, oh Africa!

President Obama’s Eulogy of Rev. Pinckney

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

We have been asked by many of our readers for the URL address of where they could find President Obama’s eulogy.  Apparently, you folks didn’t think it was going to be great so you were doing other things while this incredible statement was being made.  At the end, President Obama was referred to as “the Rev. President” by all of those on the stage – mostly AME pastors.

Incredibly, almost all of those pastors were male – in spite of the racism and sexism this entire event was decrying and which caused the death of Rev. Pinckney and 8 others being remembered.  Sometimes, we are our own worst enemies in this Civil Rights fight. I remember the all male public face of the Civil Rights Movement when Dr. King was its acknowledged head.  Women were pushed aside when the press appeared.  Those human failings, however,  do not negate the hard work that has been done and needs to continue to be done, we just hope it will be done in a more “Civil Rights” way the next time.  We would say – don’t bash others for their racism while your sexism is on display for all to see – change it all.  God forgive us all!

Jim Obergefell, my husband!

Friday, June 26th, 2015

In case you don’t subscribe to the notes from The White House, Washington, D. C., we are reprinting what just appeared, which we wanted to share with all of you.

Jim Obergefell and his husband John Hodges are the plaintiff in the same sex marriage case which the Supreme Court ruled on today, in their favor.  It is profoundly moving and we hope you read it through to the end.

_______________________________________
Jim Obergefell is one of the plaintiffs in the case decided today by the U.S. Supreme Court that held that, for the first time, any couple — straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender — can obtain a marriage license and make their commitment public and legal in all 50 states.

We reached out to him to ask for his thoughts on this historic occasion, and this is the open letter he wanted us to share with you.

If you’re standing with couples like Jim and John, Pam and Nicole, Joe and Rob, and millions more around the country today — say so here.

My husband John died 20 months ago, so we’re unable to celebrate together the Supreme Court’s decision on the case that bears my name, Obergefell v. Hodges.

Today, for the first time, any couple — straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender — may obtain a marriage license and make their commitments public and legal in all 50 states. America has taken one more step toward the promise of equality enshrined in our Constitution, and I’m humbled to be part of that.

John and I started our fight for a simple reason: We wanted the State of Ohio to recognize our lawful Maryland marriage on John’s impending death certificate. We wanted respect and dignity for our 20-year relationship, and as he lay dying of ALS, John had the right to know his last official record as a person would be accurate. We wanted to live up to the promises we made to love, honor, and protect each other as a committed and lawfully married couple.

Couples across America may now wed and have their marriage recognized and respected no matter what state they call home. No other person will learn at the most painful moment of married life, the death of a spouse, that their lawful marriage will be disregarded by the state. No married couple who moves will suddenly become two single persons because their new state ignores their lawful marriage.

Ethan and Andrew can marry in Cincinnati instead of being forced to travel to another state.

A girl named Ruby can have an accurate birth certificate listing her parents Kelly and Kelly.

Pam and Nicole never again have to fear for Grayden and Orion’s lives in a medical emergency because, in their panic, they forgot legal documents that prove both mothers have the right to approve care.

Cooper can grow into a man knowing Joe and Rob are his parents in all ways emotional and legal.

I can finally relax knowing that Ohio can never erase our marriage from John’s death certificate, and my husband can now truly rest in peace.

Marriage is about promises and commitments made legal and binding under the law, and those laws must apply equally to each and every American.

Today is a momentous day in our history. It’s a day when the Supreme Court of the United States lived up to the words inscribed above the front entrance of the courthouse:

Equal Justice Under Law.

Thank you,

Jim

BN FOUNDATION NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Thursday, June 25th, 2015

The Bettina Network Foundation, inc. is calling for volunteers to help us pack up and move the contents of a town house from Melrose, MA. to several people who are establishing permanent homes for their family.

On Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 9am we will meet for breakfast in Harvard Square Cambridge, MA. and to talk about what to expect – suggestions on how best to handle this move – suggestions for the future – getting to know one another.

From there we will go to Melrose planning to arrive at 10:30am

Please bring boxes and any wrapping paper – such as newspapers, etc. – so we can get the job done quickly and easily – many hands make light work.

We will have a U-Haul truck rented for the occasion.  If you have transportation you can offer to someone who wants to help, but is without transportation, let us know.  If you have a truck which could supplement what we have, let us know that also.

In addition, we will need – going into the week – other volunteers who can work with families helping them clean and organize their homes; teaching them how to care for what they have; and looking around the houses to see what else they might need and be able to use.  Two or more people can work together in one house to get this done.  We also ask that you look in on the same people you helped to get their homes cleaned and organized, in a few weeks, to make sure they are holding it together and the house is still in good shape.  If not, we may ask you to help again, or if the situation isn’t working out, we will ask your advice on should we drop that family from our list of those we help.

If you are a designer, we could use your help to look in on families and talk to them about designing their homes; looking at how they use the home and helping them work through the best placement of what they have and again – helping us with feed back to know what else those families need.

If you are a photographer, we would love to have pictures of the work being done with the people doing the work and some of the before and after shots in some homes where the people who live in the homes do not mind our taking pictures, without their names being attached.

Call or email us at either 617 497 9166 or 800 347 9166.  Email us at bettina-network@comcast.net.

The Black Race*

Friday, June 19th, 2015

WOW! Powerful! Thank you! I wanted to respond, but being white, I thought I should keep my mouth shut. Your blog has changed that. I am going to say what I think, wherever I am and let the chips fall where they may. I have been afraid of being called a racist most of my life. Today it really doesn’t matter. I need to be heard.

From your blog – lets start a new race! The Black Race. Since it was your blog I should let you be the charter and first member, however, in my new space I am going to be the charter and first member.

The Black Race is —

A ‘race’ you can’t be born into – you have to elect to join.

Your skin color does not matter nor does your sex.

The major criteria for joining is your need to be with people who understand equality and are equal to you and you and you to them.

A race concerned about this planet and how we take care of it.

A race of people concerned about the food we eat and what is being done to it.

A race of people into which you can put your most cherished foods, holidays, symbols, sayings which were a part of your former ‘race’ and which you want to remember and hang on to – and where others will also celebrate ‘your’ things as their own.

A race of people whose members reach out to one another to mutually be there for those of us having a difficult time getting through this life.

A race of people whose members do not tolerate homelessness.

You may maintain ‘membership’ in the Black Race and any other race you choose at the same time. (added 6/20/2015)

The Black Race has members spread around the globe and are citizens of many countries.  It is not limited to one country.  (added 6/20/2015)

Your name needs to be inscribed in the membership book of The Black Race.  Currently, you can do that by sending an email to bettinanetwork@comcast.net until a separate site is established for The Black Race and then new members would send their names to that new address. (added 6/21/2015)

Only those who sign up to be members of The Black Race are accepted.  No one is automatically a member of the Black Race. (added 6/21/2015)

We need a creed and a membership card. Each person who joins The Black Race should have their own card made up with additional cards to give to their friends, relatives and colleagues.  All are welcome to join the Black Race – and to tell the media and others that you are Black.  Maybe we should have little dinner parties to announce to our friends that we are now Black.

I will start the Black Race Creed:

I, (your name), am a member of the Black Race. If you do harm to one of us you do harm to all of us.

As a member of the Black Race I give up whatever White Privilege I have been given. (added 6/21/2015)

If there is anything you want to add to this definition of the Black Race, please feel free to do so.  If there is anything you want to add to the “Black Race Creed”, please feel free to do that also.

If you want to be public about your membership in the Black Race, send a blog to Bettina’s with your name and reasons for joining.  Come out of the closet all of you Black people.

Does someone want to contribute bumper stickers which read “I am a member of the Black Race” ?

*Ed Note:  Currently, there is no such thing as a Black Race, so this conversation about whether or not Rachel Dolezal is Black or not is a ridiculous conversation.  African Americans also don’t constitute a race of people.  So this initiative to start such a race has a clear field.

And oh, by the way, we have had a couple telephone calls asking us to find out where Rachel Dolezal has her hair done.  Anyone know the answer to that?

Dog Post Response

Thursday, May 28th, 2015

A response from a member of Bettina Network’s Lifestyle Community to the post on “Dogs, Dogs and more Dogs!

“Thank you for that post.  I was overjoyed to see someone pointing out how much we spend on our pets in view of some desperate human beings who have to fight to get a meal each and every day.

I also watch the dogs outside my window.  There is a park and we have a leash law.  I see dogs playing off their leashes every morning with their owners watching.  They run, chase what their owners throw and have a general good time.  Which is great for them!  However, I also watch in the afternoons when parents come with their toddlers and let the toddlers run around the park – right where the dogs relieved themselves.  Your intro about the disease may have been in fun, however, shortly, there is going to be a serious outbreak when a mother’s child comes down with a disease from playing where the dogs crapped.  The city does nothing about stopping the people from letting their dogs run without leashes.  That law was passed for a reason – basically to protect people and dogs.  If anything serious happened in that park – even a loud noise – there is no way to control the dogs who then react in fear.

Keep writing – I will keep reading.”

An elevator chair, which goes up and down the stairs.  The company will take it off the wall and we are sure for a small amount of money they will reinstall the chairs in your home.  There are two chairs.  One goes from the first to the second floor.  The second goes from the basement to the first floor – where the two stairs are not contiguous.

Many of the items we could not picture because Word Press only takes pictures up to 2MB.  So next time we will click accordingly – once we learn how.

There are two lovely Tiffany-style hanging lamps which are quite old and beautiful.

Dining room table and chairs.  Porcelain dinner service.  Stem glasses.

Mahogany book cases.  Pine book cases stained mahogany.

Miscellaneous items that will look lovely in your living or dining room where you need an extra something.

Clothes.  Fur coats.  A collection of 1930’s mink and fox throws for over the shoulder – remember the kind with the head, feet and tails intact – well come and see these (No conservationist comments please – this was the 1930’s and there were not many of these made).

Off-white Pinch pleated thermal drapes – lots of them.  The way they conserve heat and cold in your home will make up for the fox and mink shoulder stoles.

Nylon curtains – some with frilly ruffles for just $5.00.

An old sewing machine case – a little rubbing with coconut oil will make this case look lovely.

Oriental-style rugs – one for $25 and it is room size – the second for $125.

Pots and pans.  Kitchen miscellaneous.

Basement items, including professional floor cleaning equipment ideal for someone just starting a new business.  Use these until you have earned enough to buy the new, super shiny, over-priced machines that will take away most of your profit.

As in all Bettina Network Sales, whatever is left after the sale is donated to Bettina Network Foundation, inc.  A 501 ( c ) 3 organization and the family gets a tax credit for the amount of the items so donated.  The Bettina Network Foundation, inc. gives all of these items to people who are recently homeless and are beginning to furnish their new permanent home and/or to people in difficult situations who these items can benefit and make their lives a bit easier.  We work with Therapists and Social Workers to determine who can best use the items available.  They are not stored they are taken immediately to their new home so volunteers at the end of each sale are crucial.

If you are a Social Worker, Therapist or someone working with the homeless and would like to volunteer to help in this effort to eradicate homelessness as best we can, call us.  We send you an inventory of items available and you let us know which ones your clients can use.

If you would like to volunteer some of your time to work with the Bettina Network Foundation, inc. we welcome you.  Speak to one of the people working the sale and they will give you more information.  It is fun -a good learning experience – and who knows where it will lead for you.  We need photographers, designers to help those receiving items have an idea as to how to place them for maximum beauty, those who like to clean and work with others to help them learn how to keep up what they now own, etc., but especially those who enjoy giving – being creative – finding a way where there was no way, etc.

A New World Order

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

copyright Bettina Network, inc. 2015

We first heard of a “New World Order” when George Bush was president and let those words slip.  We want to pick up those words and expand and change what that means – just a little.

We live and see others prosper as we recapture the past and move into the future world order.  Some of us see the past as that place full of light and goodness.  Others see this new technology creating that place full of light and goodness.  We think they are both wrong and totally destroying what they are trying to achieve and capture.  How does that happen?  How did and do they get it so wrong?

We have to go back to the old world understanding that we don’t own anything on this earth.  We contribute those ways of thinking to the ‘primitives’.  Those groups of people who didn’t understand and were very ‘unintelligent’ in their ways of thinking.  Their basic belief was that we don’t and can’t own anything in this world.  All of that changed.  But did it really or only in new constructs we chose to use to define who we are and how we live!

When we enter this world we do so with nothing except the body we take on at conception.  When we leave it, we leave with nothing – not even the body with which we have identified for as long as we have lived on this earth.  So how have we gotten everything so messed up, mixed up, confused and just downright wrong?

We need to go back to accept the fact of who we are instead of who our leaders have created us to be through their mythology – which we have accepted – and look at and accept who we really are and what we really own, if anything.  Once we do that, the Bettina Lifestyle is simple – it is a “New World Order” based on our shared humanity – and a joy to live.

Whatever we receive in this life is a gift and something we own only temporarily.  It really belongs to the earth – whatever that means.  So we should take care of every pin, every dot, every tittle and iota that comes into our possession because it is not permanent and it is not ours.  We keep all of these things for a second and then pass them on to someone else, unless we have ruined all of what we have possessed in the meantime and then we throw our things into the landfills.  Those things we claim to own came from someplace else and are going someplace else when we no longer have use of whatever we have acquired.

Enter the Estate Sale – the Yard Sale – the Garage Sale.  All ways we use to get rid of our ‘old’ stuff’ that we no longer want nor think we can use.  The thought of taking care of our things because we are passing them along in the future very seldom enters our minds.  We are the throw away society.  We use it and throw it away.  And what happens to those waiting to receive those throw away items?  Sorry, but they were trashed, discarded, uncared for because the person using them interrupted the cycle by their inability to recognize their humanity and the need to share everything with those waiting to receive.  We have dehumanized those waiting to receive to justify the way we have dehumanized ourselves.  We have re-created ourselves in the image of the god we created who would put up with our sins, and wastefulness and uglinesses to ourselves and to others.

If we had taken good care of what we ‘owned’ temporarily, and understood that what we have must be used by someone else, those things would continue their lives and would continue to be useful someplace else and to someone else.

Some people can only buy and use “new” stuff.  Some of us delight and cherish the ‘old stuff’ that we find at Estate Sales.  It is like winning the lottery to find something wonderful for a fraction of what we would have to pay for the same item “new”.  It is living on society’s throw aways, but what a luxury life.

Clothes are the best example.  If you wear your clothes carefully, you can pass them on to continue to be used by someone else.  So Bettina provides for that.  Bettina Network, inc. has estate sales.  Bettina Network Foundation, inc. gives away that which is given to us to those who need the give-aways to be able to participate in this society.  How wonderful to find those give-aways in good condition.

There is no understanding of the ugliness and selfishness of the society in which we live until one becomes homeless.  You can understand it on a very small basis as you interact and see the political fights, the petty jealousies, the coveting thy neighbors belongings. You can understand it only so far, if you also have a position which pays you money to work; friends in the same or better position of whom you can be jealous; belongings which don’t quite measure up to those of your neighbors.  Homeless,  you are cut off from all of that and are standing outside alone or with children or with other family or with friends- all of you alone -it is a stark emptiness, fear and feeling of what was it all about and what is it all about now that I am on the street!  But oddly enough, that tendency to create negative structures in which to live is so strong that the homeless recreate the same scenarios only on a different level from that which we find in the society at large.  What stops that?  What intervenes to get rid of all the myths which we have created to continue this insanity?

To be homeless raises the question as to what got me in this place? Did I do something or not do something that I wound up homeless and cut off from everyone and everything except those in my condition?  There are a few people who reach out to help, but they are not my friends.  They are making themselves feel good as a part of their “belonging,”‘  enhancing their position in society; reaching out to ‘do good’, but going back into the lifestyle and the society which created the underbelly of people that are not doing so good.

Why do we throw away our children onto the streets?  Why do we cast our elderly into buildings which harbor and collect all of the germs and diseases one gets as one gets older and keeps them from being seen and interacted with by others – the normal younger ones?  Why do we eliminate youth and family from these buildings and put those who are only one step above the elderly in such places to ‘care’ for them?  Is there something about youth who don’t tow the line and the elderly who shouldn’t be seen with the rest of us that makes us segregate?

As racism subsides are we so quickly replacing it with this form of elder-ism and creating more isms – so we don’t run out and might have to acknowledge our equality?  Separate and unequal now true for the elderly and for our children?

It is interesting that one sees, on the streets, people active until about age 70 and then it is rare to see those much older unless we see them amongst the homeless.  We have to go out of our way to these elder-buildings to see anyone older than 70.  Why do we so desperately need to be better than, that we will destroy other human beings to fill our need to be better than?

Marketing and advertising create the image of being stunned by those over 40 who look good (translate young) – who are not ill – who are active in society.  We just gasp at a 50 year old who looks younger and is still very active.  Corporations almost totally refuse to hire anyone over 45 and we go along with that.  Somehow, wisdom does not count.  And we can see that in how our society operates.  If wisdom were allowed in, and we commonly shared the experiences we have acquired  from having lived many years through much,  that might change the structures of our world and those who are busy creating this horror might have to give way to others who understand, acknowledge and act out of our common humanity.

If we treated our possessions as being with us only temporarily would that change all of this?  If we consciously understood that when we leave this earth we would not even be able to do so taking our own bodies?  Would that make a change?  If we passed on what we now own and use when we either no longer want or need it and we passed that on in good shape to others would all of this change?

As of now, wearing clothes someone else bought and wore and now throws away is not considered great.  Many of us won’t wear other peoples’ clothes.  We expect to immediately get sick and die from some terminal disease we catch in that process.  This need for new stuff and only new stuff has been created by a marketing and advertising campaign which has made us deathly afraid of each other and sometimes of ourselves.  We must feed the “growth through throw away” societal structure.  The faster we can get others to discard and throw away the faster new industries and companies can grow.

Look at this, –  we can’t stand to be around someone who has an odor. That has created a whole industry, which is thriving.  Try it sometimes and see how repulsed your friends and even your family can be if you smell.  And we all smell.  The exception is those who temporarily get rid of their smell by using chemicals which in the long run are harmful to one’s health.  Maybe those products need the addition in their television commercials to list all the bad things they do to the body, if you use them, as soothing music plays in the background.  Your smell is as unique as everything else.  Get used to it.  Can you walk into a room and know any of the people who just exited by the odors left or do you know the odors left by the brand of the chemicals used by the individuals?

We prefer to be around those who have more than we do and we will do some strange things to each other reaching ‘up’.  We cater to those who seem to have more, hoping they will acknowledge us and pull us ‘up’ with them.  And those already ‘up’ are doing their best to distance themselves from those who have less because they don’t want their ‘position’ compromised, especially by the unwashed.

Take a look at what keeps us without an odor – full of chemicals.  Take a look at what  keeps us clothed – chemicals, oil, especially in the middle classes and you will find these  chemicals and processed oils giving off gases into our bodies.  The food the chefs, who now make millions of dollars for the prattle produce, – can be really fowl, only we claim it to be exquisite because we repeat what we are expected to repeat to stay a member of the group.  Once upon a time these Chefs touted Olive Oil as the only Oil to cook with if you wanted to be healthy.  Slowly, too slowly, word got out that one can’t really cook with Olive Oil because it goes rancid as the temperature in the pot goes up and it doesn’t have to go up very far for the rancidity to appear killing all of the B vitamins in our system.

Try life in this New World Order.  Take good care of what you currently own,  with the thought that it will be owned by someone else in the not too dBettina Trademarkistant future and you want to preserve it so it can continue to be used and enjoyed.  Pass your belongings on to those who either won’t or can’t pay the top dollars required of the people buying new stuff.  What is this new stuff they are buying?  Shoes full of chemicals way into four figures; New pocketbooks which show off a certain status costing into five figures.  Instead of landfill, make sure those items with which you currently live are in such good condition they can be passed on to others to enjoy.

Find someone homeless and bring them into your social circle.  Include them in your parties, your dinners, your outings, your vacations.  You don’t have to provide them with permanent housing.  When dinner is over they go back to their homeless state.  When you return from vacation, they go back to their homeless state.  When you pass someone homeless on the street – smile and speak.  When you pass anyone on the street – smile and acknowledge your common humanity.  What will that do?  Possibly cure this society’s penchant for creating homelessness and then not taking responsibility for what we have created.  How? By acknowledging our common humanity.  If I have a lot in common with that person on the street how can I do otherwise than to at least speak.  Maybe one day……………..

As the homeless are more included in your life and the lives of your friends and family maybe they will see another way to move out of the state they are in.  Maybe doors have been opened for them and within them to help move them off the street.

Try this beginning of a truly New World Order and see how far it takes you and us.

Thirst for learning is unquenchable

The thirst for knowledge is unquenchable!

What are Bettina Network Hedge Schools?  How do they work?

A Bettina Home is a part of the Bettina Network Educational Institute.  We take homes into Bettina Network, inc. because they have something to contribute to our learning; they are full of many amenities not found elsewhere; the knowledge they contribute is sometimes in the mainstream, but most often personal history and experience you can’t find or learn from the history books.  As a Bettina Home they are also Bettina Network Hedge Schools.

A Bettina Home/Bettina Network Hedge School, is a place where you can stay while visiting a particular city, country, village either on other business or vacation or a historical review of the area and you want to add to the experience of the trip; or you can travel to a Bettina Network Hedge School just for the experience, knowledge and wisdom it adds to your life.

The family in residence offers their life-experience, a workshop, knowledge of art, architecture, prayer, spirituality, health, cooking, or whatever is their specialty.  In Bettina Homes/Bettina Network Hedge Schools, those specialties change as the family lives and grows and experiences life from different perspectives.

Bettina Network Hedge Schools are patterned after the historical “Hedge Schools” of Ireland, which were one of the things Mary Daly was interested in establishing.  With everything else she did for the betterment of women, men and children, she did not get around to establishing her closely held love for the idea of Hedge Schools.  To Mary it was a way to teach feminism without the interference and regulation of current educational institutions.  They are the same for Bettina Network, inc. although we are not limiting the Bettina Network Hedge Schools to feminism.  We include all the world’s knowledge, experience, religions,  spirituality.

While we have chosen the idea of Irelands’ Hedge Schools for Bettina Homes, many countries around the globe have had and still have versions of the historical Hedge Schools – most particularly where women are not allowed a formal education, or to be educated at all in anything, except maybe a few home crafts, which they learn by doing.

What were Hedge Schools?  They were clandestine schools.  Places Catholics in Ireland went to learn what was illegal for them to learn under the then existing Penal Laws. These laws forbade the teaching of Catholic catechism as well as all education for Catholics.  They were held in inaccessible caves, tiny huts, behind hedges, in groves of trees, or wherever time, space and a bit of knowledge could be passed on.

In the Hedge Schools in Ireland, all those many years ago, the schoolmaster went from house to house to teach and impart knowledge to as many as possible.  They were constantly being hunted down for what they were doing and had to be hidden by the local populace.  Almost like the Underground Railroad, some houses, which protected the teachers in these schools, had walled off places in the home where they could hide when those searching them out showed up.

In Bettina Homes/Bettina Network Hedge Schools the students travel from house to house, instead of the “Hedge School Masters*” traveling.  Although we have a few ‘have knowledge will travel’  Hedge School Masters*” who travel from house to house to hold workshops and lead other learnings at Bettina Network Hedge Schools, we are looking for more.  Not all Bettina Network Hedge Schools have traveling ‘Masters*’.  Most are places which welcome those thirsting for knowledge and wisdom and the “Hedge School Master*” lives in and owns the house.

We are looking for knowledge that is not readily accessible. Or that has become skewered by vested interests.  It is also a place to learn  a story from those who actually lived the times – which may be different from accepted history.

The Hedge Schools of old taught Latin and Greek, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, history, spelling, writing, arts, crafts, etc.  And the teaching was done by the poorest and most ragged people who had no homes and who taught under shelter of the hedges.  In todays world we would look down on such people and consider them lazy, shiftless, ignorant because we don’t look beyond the outer trappings.  These “Hedge School Masters*” of old haggled for purchases in Greek, or discussed theories in Latin, and were generally very highly educated both in the traditional knowledge of the world and the wisdom which comes from having lived such harsh lives. They were known as “hedge school masters*”.  We are known as “Bettina Network Hedge Schools” and some of our “Hedge School Masters*” may look a bit like the hedge school masters of old.

We don’t give degrees or other accolades to show one’s achievement in particular areas.  We do spread knowledge and share experiences with those who serendipitously stay in a Bettina Home.

What are the other parts of this company?  The Bettina Network’s Blog shares information and knowledge culled from the talk around the breakfast table in Bettina Homes.  Bettina’s Menu of Events spreads information about events which we consider ‘in the Bettina Lifestyle’. The Bettina Home/Bettina Network Hedge Schools share and spread knowledge, experience and wisdom to as many people as we can reach. The Bettina Network Foundation, inc. works to eliminate homelessness.

We are connecting a community of people.  We are sharing what we have and weaving a net so we have some protection from falling through into the morass of homelessness, of ignorance, of isolation.  The Bettina Network Hedge Schools  provide ways for you to travel and learn as you travel.  We provide not just a room for the night; or a meal for a part of the day; but permanent places to pass on to others some of the history now being dropped and/or changed as well as some of the learning being skewered and mis-told by those marketing for money.  We also pass on the arts and crafts of the world with workshops on creativity, cooking, sewing and how to live authentic lives. – being able to ignore those outer trappings we seem to see first and sometimes only.

There is nothing wrong with money – let me quickly add – just something wrong in the way we are moving to intensify its home with just a few and to make it scarce among the many.

The Bettina Hedge Schools are just another way the Bettina Network, inc. is coming together to help others in their quest to bring all of our money, the way we spend it and our talents together to benefit each other without having to stop to spend enormous amounts of time and resources unsuccessfully trying to cure problems we created in the first place, by the way we have lived on this planet.

*Since today we recognize the title of “Hedge School Master” as sexist – we are changing that title to “Hedge School Facilitator”.

Thanks for the Health Information!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Hi folks,

Let me give back by summarizing for you what I took away from my stay at one of your homes, which changed my health dramatically.

I arrived feeling awful.  Pain all over and exhausted.  I had been traveling for a couple weeks and wasn’t feeling too great before I set out so you can imagine how I felt when I arrived.

I was greeted with a cup of ginger root tea.  It was the beginning of my turn around.  I now make ginger root tea once a week and it lasts about a week because I am the only one drinking it. No one else is allowed unless they undertake to make a huge pot and that isn’t going to happen.

I ate as though food was going out of style at the house where I stayed.  I fully expected to have gained several pounds on returning home, but not only had I lost weight, but – and this isn’t always discussed – my bowel movements had quadrupled.  At my age that is a concern because somehow, I thought you just had smaller bowel movements as time wore-on.  I think that is the real reason for my recovery.

The food was all organic – which was fantastic.  My food was normally all processed before I discovered your network.  If I ate anything healthy, it was purely accidental.   I didn’t realize until then that my food. during processing,  had all the taste taken out as the companies strove for long shelf life and what was added to the food to make it palatable was salt and sugar.  No more of that in my body.

I have several rituals that I now have added to my lifestyle.  The last thing I do at night is have goats milk yogurt with a bit of organic maple syrup over the top. No sugar or other stuff in the yogurt – only what I add myself.

First thing in the morning I have a cup of warm water with lemon juice squeezed into the cup – the juice of one organic lemon.

Later in the day I try to snack on apples/oranges/bananas.  That keeps the sugar demons away – and, of course, my organic ginger root tea keeps me going throughout the day.

In the afternoon, about 4pm I have three limes (organic) squeezed into a cup and I drink that straight without the addition of water or anything else. I know you  folks talk about the woman from India whose nutritionist suggested she have four limes per day about 4pm, but I can be cheap and somehow I can’t bring myself to use four limes a day.  It took a few days before I got good at drinking that lime juice without major contortions of the face, but today it actually is something I look forward to – the pickup in energy for me is phenomenal.

By the time I left your house to go home I was feeling no pain.  It was all gone and I had enough energy throughout the week to get my work done – and I had an extremely difficult schedule, trying to get things done without having to extend my stay – cost was a consideration.

Hope that helps someone else reading your blog.  I wouldn’t have believed the change in my energy level or all the other things that happened to me and as I continue to feel better, I continue on this regimen.

Needless to say, those who tried to take me to dinner loved your regimen because it meant I ate almost nothing in the restaurants and their bill was miniscule.  I tried to be social, but my stomach just flipped and wouldn’t stand for the intrusion of the wrong food. I think I am going to become a very popular person to take out to dinner.

Keep those discussions going during breakfast – make them about health so we can get more of what other people are doing to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  I am now a Bettina health fanatic.  In a few weeks I will calm down and just be like everyone else, but in the meantime I am acting like the newly converted with my fanaticism.

A Bettina Network Foundation Day on the Town

Monday, February 9th, 2015

February 7, 2015 – Quincy, MA.

We had a great Saturday.

Those who volunteered to help us move the furnishings from an apartment in Quincy, MA., to give to others who could use the items, gathered together for a bit of food, conversation, getting to know each other, learning what the day would be like, and prayer.

The morning started with breakfast made by the Rev. Dr. Robert Bennett so we were off to a good start.

Before going out the door on our way, we joined hands in a circle of prayer and it set the tone for the rest of our time together.

The volunteers were eight Seminarians from Harvard Divinity School – gathered together by Jonathan Bett Fields, also an HDS Seminarian.  Next time we will include a photographer – the possibilities for great pictures to share with you were endless.

Cheryl Nicholas, who was the inspiration behind all of this, brought the UHaul truck and oversaw the move to get everything into the UHaul so her job of off-loading the items as she went about delivering the furnishings would be easier.  Cheryl didn’t get away without an injury, but we put a bit of medicine on her cut to stop the bleeding and she and the rest of us continued.  Next time, we will bring a first aid kit, we did need one.  A few cuts and bruises, but no one noticed, everyone just kept moving to get the job done.

Ramesh Iyer, who made the donation to Bettina Network Foundation, inc. was a joy.  His ‘gentle reminders’ will become a part of Bettina lore and will be stored in the Bettina archives.  We picked up his spirit and instead of calling or emailing to say what needs to be done – NOW, we have established the practice of sending ‘gentle reminders’.

Kaitlyn Justus was a wonder.  Everytime we looked around she was out the door with yet another piece of furniture or a very large box.

Farris Blount worked with Cheryl outside making sure the items were in the UHaul properly.

Chavis T. Jones became a whirlwind of activity when he saw a watch in a box that might be added to his collection, under the right circumstances

Ryan Cogswell felt good about the “manual labor” he was doing.  He must have been totally exhausted at the end of the day.

Everyone pitched in to move the first pieces out the door, which were unbelievably heavy, bulky, hard to move and maneuver and turned out to be a godsend to those who received them – beautiful leather couches, in like-new condition.  One piece, that took everybody together to move, was a pull-out bed whose mattress was still wrapped in the plastic in which it was delivered when first purchased.  We took turns deciding how to get the pieces out the door – it was finally all these ideas together that succeeded.

We learned many lessons on Saturday.  Mostly, we learned how beautiful is the human spirit when we are all engaged in God’s work.

Marceline Donaldson made lunch which ended this part of our day together.

We were a very diverse group.  God for each one of us would be described in different terms, but bottom line what prevailed was that which is within us, that makes us know we are all one and responsible for one another – no matter our different physical appearances or religions or other seeming differences, or how we describe the God we worship.

May it ever be so in all that we do.
